Day Jobs

Cats: Writing Tips| 2 Comments »

It is hard to be a writer with a day job. My day job is SEO SEM and a bunch of other technical names. I work through several sites, but home is www.fetch50k.com . I talk to several writers who have a difficult time balancing work, family, and their day jobs. I meet a lot of interesting people who play a part in my short stories.

The SEO SEM industry that I work in is highly competitive. Falkner said, “never worry about excelling others, just focus on excelling yourself.” (Or something like this). I have to remember this in my day job because ‘perception is everything.’ Read the rest of this entry »

Handicap

Cats: Uncategorized| No Comments »

My husband is handicapped. He will soon be in a wheel chair. It changes how you look at the world. We have already made plans to move our bedroom to the main floor. He loves his jeep, but we’ll soon need to get a handicap accessible van. We’ll probably go for a full sized one, despite the rising gas costs.

I’ve already looked at websites with used handicapped vans for sale I was pleasantly surprised to find dealerships that feature nothing but handicap vans.  I was pleased to find websites like Mobilityworks. I found two or three vans that were suitable for us. I was also pleased to find that accessible vans look just like normal vans.

There are a lot of problems with transporting people in wheelchairs. For example, one thing that no one considers is the fact that I’ll also be older, but it will be my responsibility to get the wheelchair into the van. I’m not that strong.

There is no way we can live without a vehicle for my husband. He loves to drive. There is no way we can ‘ground’ him.  Life is ever evolving. It is a constant change, each offering its own challenges. It is nice that sometimes people work to help us make life easier.

Writing Friends

It is monday morning. I am one of those people who find Monday a hard day to handle. It is so quiet. The kids are at school. My husband is recouping. It is a great day to write, but I rarely feel inspired.

I find that my best writing times are Thursday and Friday. I also like writing later in the evening when everyone is home. I like the excitement. I haven’t worked on Montana for a few weeks, but not that the birds are singing early in the morning, and the soft air is making me wake earlier, I am starting to be inspired again.

A Tarnished Heart - Leslie Dicken

I IM’ed Leslie Dicken today in her response ‘My books arrived.’ She has the first first run of her book. This isn’t her first book in print. She has several shorter ebooks, and one print book on Amazon The Price of Discovery by Jordanna Kay, her pseudonym. The book she received today is her first under her actual name.

There is always the question, “What did it feel like to see your name in print.”  Leslie said “sort of unbelievable, like it wasn’t real, but just a dream.” I’ve always felt like it was the ‘brass ring’ like the story has gone full circle and was now complete. I’ve reviewed Leslie’s book, and love it.

There is always another book. I’m working on 2 more historicals. Leslie is not working on another historical. She finds the genre limited. Her current WIP is a contemporary.

I asked her How to Write a Novel. I always love to hear all the different methods.

A lot of trial and error! Starts and stops! Begin with a general idea or image and then “feel” my way around until I find the right characters and setting for it. Then, the deeper I get into the story, the more I’ll plot and outline the remaining scenes. Read the rest of this entry »

Youth Retreats

Cats: Uncategorized| No Comments »

Do you send your teens to youth retreats? You should. Mine goes on 2 a year and he is always pumped and animated when he comes back. He just returned from one at a local university - full of stories.

We were able to share two hours while he told me how the security guards made a game of kids coming back late from curfew, and skits, playing sports with new friends, learning different cultures, and expanding his horizons.

I’ve used some of his experiences in my stories and novels. I find that the best characters come from personal experiences… of others. That is because it gives me different reactions, actions, and views for my characters. Even so, whether you harvest from your teen’s experiences or not, a youth retreat is always worth the money.

The DIY Trap

Cats: Uncategorized| 5 Comments »

I use to be caught in the DIY trap. I believed that because I was a writer, and because I was a graphic artist with experience in the magazine business that I could make my own logos, business cards, etc. Then a friend who just left New York offered to make me a logo.

Well - I was shamed. It was wonderful - far better than what I had in mind. The thing is, you may know a bit about copy-writing, graphic art, etc. But, you can’t know what colors sell to what target demographics. Read the rest of this entry »
