Why Publishers Buy Books
Cats: Uncategorized|Most authors think that publishers are looking for nothing more than the story in your mind. They believe that if they write 80 000 words - anyway they want - they will get published. I wrote my first book this way.
1. The author’s previous books have sold well.
2. The book is similar in structure to what is currently selling.
3. The characters are well developed, emotionally healthy, and are someone readers will love to cheer for.
4. A new editor has arrived from another house and is building a list of authors.
5. The publisher is working on a marketing package and needs several books on a similar topic.
6. The book will be the first in a series with strong growth potential.
7. The idea for the book is timely.
8. The author’s promotion plan guarantees the publisher will make back their original investment.
9. The author is working to build a career as a writer and is worth the investment.
10. The author is a media magnet who can generate their own publicity.
11. The house has published similar books with success.
These are some of the reasons why publishers buy books from new authors. If there is one thing you can do to get published, then it is to build a big fan list.

I suppose one way to build a fan list is to use the social networking sites and forums - and to get a blog, of course.

I agree with the fan list idea and Sharon makes a good point about that. The fan list is based on the prospective author as a person (ability to relate to others) as well as what they enjoy talking about and sharing with others. One hopes this will all translate into book sales once that book is a published reality.
